Taking Matters Into My Own Hands

I can see the benefit to me to make up my own words and also to correct the spelling in the dictionary we all use. Who says the dictionary people get to decide spelling and then force their opinions on the rest of us?

Some people in the news lately have been showing their mentality quotient by doing just this. Like the people out in Arizona who are fighting the city council for deciding to have only one trash pickup company allowed in their gorgeous and expensive neighborhood. It was getting pretty hairy for five different disposal trucks to maneuver around on trash day, not to mention the destruction of the roads. But, noooooo, some people want their say. They resent having their "choice" taken away. So we will be hearing about the so-called injustice of that trash for awhile.

For me, I will continue making up my own words even if no one else wants to learn my new language. Heck, I can talk to myself, I already do that occasionally anyway. Even more fun if I talk and answer and no one could understand.

Regarding the spelling being forced on us in the dictionary. A good example is the word asinine. That is spelled so wrong. It is just wrong. It should be assinine. Don't you agree?

It's is okay if you agree with the bird in the graphic found on Google.

  1. Ah, you Yanks spell everything wrong anyway! :-)

    Color should be Colour, etc.

  3. Right you are -
And choice? It's never about the choice itself, it seems. Sometimes it's about control.

  4. I hadn't read about that trash pickup thing going on. Wonder how they would decide which one gets the job. Being a stickler for correct spelling, I CARE that there is a right way and a wrong way to spell a word, but I get a chance to feel supercilious quite often. (Now that's a word, eh?)

  5. The good thing about making up our own words is that we can spell them any way we want to.

  6. Oh, the official spelling (and sometimes pronunciations) of some words seems completely out of whack.

My daughter and I have a few words that are totally made up and that we understand while others would shake their heads and think we're crazy (It's okay, though, because we are).

I talk to the animals...which is probably exactly like talking to myself :)

  7. The tyranny of language and the colored underlines must be stopped! The revolution begins...

  8. English is one crazy language.

  9. was this post about the title in the last post?
Making up words is fun. I think it's called slang. Language is a living thing.
You know someone made up "blog". I am pushing for "bladge".

  10. Ha! I always thought it was assinine! And I do have some of my own words and phrases. My hubby calls them "Beanisms"! :-)

  11. You have a 1st amendment right to make up as many words as you wish! So goforit!

  12. I've always ignored all the rules when it comes to English. Well when it comes to most things.

  13. you also wonder, what does NINE (9) have to do with it????????

  14. I dunno.. I see what that crow is saying and all I want to do is add the word "weaver" to it.

  16. Yep, it should be assinine. I mean, it's just logical, isn't it?

Had to chuckle at Hilary's little play on words.

  17. Well, I don't think that Sarah Palin would "refudiate" this post.

  18. Hey, making up words worked extremely well for Anthony Burgess in "A Clockwork Orange." I say go for it. What's the worst thing that can happen, anyway? Daniel Webster comes back from the dead to hassle you?

  19. I do actually agree and have thought of this, too. Since "ass" has two "s's," a word derived from it should as well. But then English is a nightmare and a mess. I'm really glad I don't have to learn it as a second language.

  20. My early teachers were educated in the UK, and my latter, USA.

But they all agreed that both spellings are accepted in our education system.

I prefer British :) though I use an American dictionary.

  21. You mean it is NOT spelled assinine? No wonder. I just thought the spellcheck was being coy again

  22. I love the comment about us Yanks spelling everything wrong anyway! Oh, that gave me my laugh for the day!

    I'm always making up words!

    All the best,

  23. I agree about asinine. Much more evocative of what we usually mean when spelled "assinine". There is something to be said for formalized spelling, though. If spelled correctly, it saves folks from having to ask if the person meant something else. For instance, did you loose the hounds or lose the hounds? Makes all the difference in the world, especially if you're a burglar :-)

  24. Why can't we all just spell anyway we want to:)

  25. Hi Techno, I've been thinking about you and James and glad to catch up and read that you're move is complete. I didn't realize you were doing the ENTIRE move by yourselves-- Oy-- You probably came up with a new word for total exhaustion! That's A LOT of work.

Hope you're feeling better, your cold is gone and you are loving the new place.

  26. Awesome. I totally agree! Assume is spelled with three letters that usually describe me:) So why not assinine?

P.S. - Sorry I'm so slow lately, Technobabe. I'm on the road again...and again...and posting in between. Hopefully, life will settle down soon. It's awesome to see you. Just wanted to let you know it's not intentional. I think of you during the week (always with a smile). Have a beautiful weekend.

  27. Absolutely no reason why you shouldn't make up your own words, but surely the dictionary is just cataloguing (or even cataloging) (or as I would prefer catalogging)what has become common usage. It is not meant to be prescriptive.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh no, you definitely have the right spelling. Go get em, Techno!

  29. Why not keep both spellings? One for little stupidities, the other for big ones? Makes sense to me.

  30. You have my support to form a rebellion against assinine words misspelled in dictionaries everywhere.

I'm excited for your new place and the settling into it that makes it feel like home. And I rejoice with you that your marriage has such strength and tenderness.

  33. Just wanted to tell you -in response to your comment about the chemo on my post -the chemo has its issues, here and there with me, yes, but the culprit in my feeling so low and crappy yesterday and today was the lovely injection to keep the blood counts up where they should be -the "Neuplasta" stuff. And the nurse even warned me, told me as she gave the injection that she was about to make a mess of my next two days -and it did! But, it is slowly ebbing away and leaving me with just the namby-pamby crapola of the old chemo in its wake. Nothing dire then!

  35. Oh yes, I love making up words...like fantublous or rediculosidy...and have been known to talk to myself too...I think we would get along rather well...I have to agree it is assinine!
