Groundhog Day grew out of a German superstition
that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow February 2
winter will last another six weeks.
If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will be early.

Happy Belated Groundhog Day! This is really an interesting superstition. Too bad it doesn't apply here in countries near the Equator. =P
