Halloween 2011

Do you dress up in costume to pass out candy to the trick or treaters? We don't, but I enjoy watching James pass out candy and speak with the little ones who knock on the door of the little hippie house. I have never celebrated Halloween, nor did my kids when they were growing up. But we celebrated Harvest and Autumn with a party at home with any of their friends willing to pass on the door to door candy hunt, or a special night out together instead of costumes and candy. I just could not take a chance that any of my precious children would be the one kid in thousands that ate tainted treats from strangers. So many people told me I was anal about it and I should let my kids have fun like all the other kids. But they knew my reasons and if someone asked them what they thought about missing out on Halloween trick or treating, they said they thought it might be fun but that we always did such special and fun things on Halloween and they could have candy any time, that they didn't feel bad about it. The youngest was three when their dad and I divorced; so when they were with their dad and step mom around Halloween, they were taken out trick or treating. I knew they were safe when they were with me; that was all I could do. I couldn't control their environment when they were with their dad, which wasn't very often after their dad and step mom moved out of state.
For everyone who celebrates Halloween, have a great one. Or a spooky one.

Living in the same small town as Ronald Clark O'Bryan, took a lot of the fun and comfort out of Trick or Treating around here. My kids were only allowed go to homes we knew.

Did Ronald ever express remorse for killing his son? That is one example of why I did not want my kids taking candy from strangers. We moved so often that we didn't know many neighbors.

We will do some trick-or-treating around here. My grandkids will come over early and have a bite to eat and then go out on my street, then off to other houses where they know people.
I like your spooky picture of the stairs.

Will James be passing out something without sugar and wheat? Of course he will! But what? I'm giving away dark chocolate... :-)

I loved trick or treating as a child, but was paranoid about razor blades in my candy and always checked each and every piece before eating. And as a good mother, I passed that paranoia on to my children! I totally understand your fears! We actually lived near Ms. A's town when they were small (I was too old for him to affect my own trick-or-treating) so there were always plenty of fall festivals to attend as well.

We don't celebrate Halloween, but maybe for different reasons to you? As Christians we prefer to celebrate goodness.

I never know what time kids start trick or treating. It seems like it's earlier every year, and I work so late!

You have to do what's best for your own family, and like you said, candy wasn't exclusive to that one day at your house, so it wasn't a big issue. I'm glad you found an alternative that was equally fun for them!

Trick or Treating is relatively new over here, say getting more popular in the last 15 years or so.

When I was a kid we would do pumpkin heads (but usually with a swede as they were cheaper and easier to get hold of), watch Hammer movies and play on hastily put together ouija boards.

My kids tended to prefer staying at home and giving out sweets to those who visited - OK by me!

When the kids were younger I took them out trick or treating because I loved it so much as a kid myself. They've outgrown it, mostly, but I don't worry about strangers - I wouldn't take them to a neighborhood I wasn't familiar with. Now we hang out with friends, have pizza and beer, and hand out candy.
