Not A Log Cabin, But A Log Radio To Put In A Log Cabin

Why am I so interested in solar energy? Maybe because I am old enough to remember the science projects and alternative energy discussions throughout school. Maybe because I have witnessed the escalating costs of electricity while the demand and need for electricity keep increasing. Maybe the thought of living a simple life and being able to be self-sustaining is appealing. An article in Scientific American says that solar energy costs 50% less than less year. This is so encouraging. Hubby and I share a desire to some day build a geodesic dome home.

Simple things like this log radio are appealing to me. The full description is on Design Boom.
This log radio doesn't use batteries or electricity, just solar energy.

.... unfortunately solar energy cannot provide enough for everyone. Even my country is considering nuclear in years to come. :(

I guess I just don't understand why the feet-dragging on using only renewable energy. Sigh. Anyway . . . please stop by my blog at your earliest convenience. Something special for you there.

This is awesome. I love the idea of simple. I heard that my electric company is raising the rates yet again...argh. Just in time for winter and right in the middle of the Recession. My husband and I are very frugal and don't use a lot, but the bills are still so high. I'd love to see your house when you build it.

alternative power is very intriguing and hopefully a wave of the future!

hmmm, i am sad to say, that we hooked up to the grit, when it came to our doorstep. In a time when we were just debating on going solar. We lived without power before. And really i believe with radios like that (neat!) and us using less power, we could live off alternative energy, as in solar, geothermo, wind.

My husband wanted to build a dome for years. We used to study Buckminster Fuller stuff all the time. Good luck with your dream and cool radio.

Glad to hear that my last post about my friend Shirley and her help with my dilemma sparked some memories for you.

Your post here reminded me that my Grandma often told me about how my Mom's two older brothers were always very interested in radios and such and when they were in their early teens, they both built crystal radios. This was way back in the day when radios were a very new thing to the world ya know. One of those two uncles also was always fascinated with ham radios and had one in his basement when I was growing up and a young adult too. He studied to learn to be able to talk on the Ham radio but never completed the program to take the test and such to be a licensed Ham radio operator! Isn't it funny how one thing someone posts about can spark other memories in folks?

We asked our landlord about installing solar panels on the roof and to our surprise he wasn't against it. He said he wanted to do some more research and wait until it was a little more cost efficient for him. Still it felt hopeful that he would consider it.

More and more, I'm seeing, reading and learning about alternative energy sources. This is a good one!
Thanks.
