Wind Down In The Evening

Wind down time, not rev up time. That's why evenings were made.

No heavy discussions in the evening. No mail to read either. If I haven't gotten the mail earlier in the day then the mail can wait till the next day. I won't read mail in the evening.

Insomnia was a frequent robber of sleep most of my life. Various reasons for the variety of life situations. Noise is a contributing factor as well as unhappiness and depression. I started sleeping better when I was with hubby, at least able to sleep several hours at one time. These days I sleep through the night most of the time with a couple quick trips in a half awake state to the bathroom.

Mornings are my favorite part of the day. And things go downhill from there. Afternoon is okay and then evening is for getting ready mentally for night. Night is only for going to bed and getting sleep so I can welcome another morning.

Thank goodness not everyone wants to be be up at the same time and thank goodness everyone doesn't want to live in the same place. Think how crowded that would be.

agreed, I never thought of how hectic the world may be if everyone was a morning person or if everyone's most functional time was during certain hours. It is good that everyone runs on a different schedule it allows for less crowding and round the clock creativity and productivity.

I know my doctor says no t.v, no phone calls, and no computer in the evening, I try as much as I can, Here it is almost 4 and awake...I am always awake for two hours and then back to bed. I am supposed to be reading the boringest book I can find. go figure. ahhhhh. take care.

I like mornings too, and got a super early start on today actually :) Hope you have a good day!

I love the evenings - a walk with the dog, watch a bit of TV, read, paint a toy soldier or 2, a quick blast on a guitar...

Not so keen on mornings...

Some people thrive on the energy.
But I'm with you, especially lately....
Tone it down, right?!
Sometimes, I must confess,
I even get up in the night for coffee.
And complain that I can't sleep!
That's a "Duh!"
If ever there was one!

Mmmm. I'm a morning person, too. From 5 am 'til noon I'm at my best, and if things don't get done then, there's maybe a 50% chance they'll get done that day.

Evening is ok, too, but afternoon is "dumb time" for me. I probably should have lived in one of those "siesta countries."

There's a saying something like "the morning is the Lord's, and the evening is the angels', but the afternoon belongs to the devil." Maybe so, maybe not, but that's me in a nutshell.

I am a morning person too. I love your description of your wind down time in the evenings. A good night's sleep makes the whole next day better for me.

Never thought of it that way. So true. I used to be an evening person, but not any more. I like mornings too.

Cpt Pownzor, exactly! In busy traffic areas it should be made tax advantageous to owners of companies to stagger their employees so they are not all on the road at the same time.

Hi Cinner, If you can be awake for a couple hours and go back to sleep then that is what works for you. It would be nice if you could have uninterrupted sleep sometimes though.

Yo Gary, my pottery maker bud, living in the lovely area you get to live would encourage anyone to love mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

Brian, with your extreme brain I would think you would be mentally active all night.

Rock Chef, sounds like your enjoy your evenings. Nice.

Anne, tone it down is a good way to say it, yes indeed.

Cricket, 5 am we are up and rarin' to go. By 1 I am pretty much done for the day mentally. Ha. Are we related?

Same here. I'm a morning person, usually awake between 5:00 and 5:30. That's also the best time to do my laundry, which is then done by 6:30. What amazes me is how many of us morning people marry night people. Hubby is usually starting his day when mine is winding down!

I'm glad that you have found a rhythm that works for you, TechnoBabe. I've always been a night person - it's when my brain is most fired up. Luckily I've been able to adapt my work to my natural timetable.

I love this and can relate.

night time around here is about helping my daughter finish her homework. not a favorite pass time, but oh well. i still read to her for a bit, it's the best part about night. so cozy!

I won't let myself read or watch anything heavy in the evening or else I have real issues sleeping. My husband gets bummed out, but complies.

DJan, I knew you had to be a sister morning gal!

Talon, and even better for me is that James has same hours. I am usually around night people. Yikes.

Kristina, glad you relate. You are great. Hey, it rhymes.

Everyday Goddess, reading with your daughter is special time for sure.

Unknown Mami, good for you taking care of yourself and preparing for sleep in ways that suit you best.

I was telling my brother-in-law over Thanksgiving that sleeping is something I'm really good at. I guess I didn't "knock of wood" because last night I awoke at 4AM and could not get back to sleep. I often don't go to sleep until midnight or later so I need to sleep until about 8 or so. Usually I have no problem.

BTW - you really like candles eh?

Evenings are for relaxing...

I look forward to the winding down of the day. I like to be by myself when possible and just chill out. I have had a few weeks of not feeling well so am just getting back to the blogs I follow. Hoping all is well with you!

I tend to be a night owl and/or insomniac. The hours just get away from me sometimes.

Thinking of that kind of crowd makes my insomnia worse!

I'm a morning person too. I love to be alone in the morning, just me, myself and I. I dont like to be alone at night tho'.

Early, early morning or later in the evening or night are the only time I get for myself to just write, read, think or meditate. It gets dark here early these days so I enjoy lighting a few candles, reading to the little one's and just cuddling with them...then once they are asleep my husband is soon after since his work requires a very early rising...then it's my time. :)

We also don't talk about money at night. We watch TV and laugh and relax. I love evenings.

:) Good for you!
Yes, it is fortunate that not that much people would crowd the places that we enjoy and rest in.

I don't like crowds myself, to the disbelief of friends and family!

Hello Technobabe, your blog looks wonderful and yes we should wind down before bed. Sadly to say, I need the tv to help me sleep. It is not the wisest thing to do before bed but..

You mentioned about moving to a smaller place, we moved office into a much smaller space. And liked it. It is cozy and I felt more efficient. Small space is great, big space can be wasteful. At least that is how I beginning to see it now.

Thank you for coming by Live High. I am glad to be back and glad to be able to visit again. I did think of you Technobabe during the time I was away.

lisleman, as I get older sleep is easier for me. For so many years I could not turn off my mind and just relax. Yes, I like candles, and so do all my kids.

Vinny, I think relaxing is so important to good health.

Cheryl, so sorry to hear you have not been feeling well. I am doing quite fine now that the move is over. We have been in the new little hippie house one month now.

Hilary, your nights are like my younger daughter's. She has always been a night person.

Mama Zen, crowds are not for me either.

Clippy Mat, interesting that you have different needs at morning and at night.

Lori, creating a calm and gentle atmosphere in the evening for the littles is setting them a good example for the rest of their lives.

Kazzy, that is a good one, no talking about money at night. That needs to be added to this post.

Shadowthorne, I can see that about you not liking crowds.

Ocean Girl, thank you for your very nice comment. I hope you are doing well. All your readers have missed reading your posts.

Sleep has never been easy for me at night. When it comes I welcome it and I sleep very deeply. I seem to doze off more during the day as I age and especially right now. I miss the sun!! But it will be better in no time.

Sounds like you have a good system for winding down. My sleep patterns come and go-- Fortunately, the last few months, sleep has come easily for me.

I don't have a favorite time of day, and thankfully, lately I have been sleeping peacefully and soundly at night. But there is no rhyme or reason to my body's rhythms, for almost a whole year I could not sleep more than two or three hours at night, then last June I got a virus and I was sick for weeks, and all of a sudden I was sleeping again! Go figure.

'wishing you happy days and peaceful nights,
Eileen

We seldom make any serious decisions in the evening, instead wife and I have "morning meeting" over coffee. Putting decisions off until the morning is a good strategy to look at them fresh and to put off dwelling on them before bed.

We try to hit the spa every evening before bed as well. That is a wonderful relaxer.

I like to stay up until around midnight now that I am retired. I can sleep until 7 AM if I want. Today I slept on the boat and got up at 8. Nice to just make my own schedule now.

Sal Cordova said...

Couldn't agree more! When I get home the last thing I want to do is add more to my day. Eat, read a book, put on a movie, that's my evening.

So true. I'm glad we're all different. I do need to follow your example of "chilling out" in the evenings, though. I'm a night owl by nature, but I have to get up for work during the day. No matter how tired I am, I kick in a second wind at 9 p.m. Not much sleep:)

Have a great week, Technobabe!

Thank God you don't have everything, too. I mean, where would you put it?

(I'm a night person, but I can appreciate your need for quiet. I never used to need it--I'm an extreme extrovert--but as time's gone by, I appreciate calm and solitude more than I ever imagined I could. Now I have to have it. I crave it.)

I use to be a night time rev up gal but the older I get the more I love winding down in the evenings. Makes for a much nicer me.
