Rainy Days

Does a rainy day spoil your good mood? Does the weather dictate how you feel, how you respond to others? How important is the rain or shine in your life?

Some people need special light in their home to boost their mood, to keep them stable when the sun is not shining. Not to minimize people suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. A day of rain and gray clouds can affect the human spirit. So much, in fact, that we may miss some joy, or a wonderful gift from nature, or from a friend. We may miss an opportunity to reach out to someone when a small gesture from us would make a huge difference in their life at just that moment.

I made up my mind I did not want to miss anything in nature. For most of my life I rode motorcycles and the biggest thrill was being close to nature. The smells and sights and sounds, no barriers. Most rides were fantastic and then someone would throw away a cigarette and it would fly out their window onto me. But it was still a thousand percent better than not riding in the wind.

I have owned a rubber poncho for years. I would step into my hiking boots, toss the poncho over my head, and walk in the rain. If someone were to ask me if I like the rain, I would have to say "not particularly"; but walking in the rain and coming home damp and worn out taught me I enjoyed the challenge. Walking in the rain provides a perfect atmosphere for thinking deep thoughts and remembering how much the rain is needed on the planet. Maybe walking in the rain was my way of giving thanks. I still have the poncho and now, living in Nebraska, I can see rain boots would be good to wear outside in the rain. Maybe Santa will get me some rain boots. But I still have some great hiking boots until or if Santa gets my message by Christmas.

Rain doesn't spoil my mood but it certainly changes it. Before it comes you sometimes get such magnificent clouds and lighting, after it has been you often get such wonderful wet earthy smells : but whilst it is pelting down my mood tends to get more sombre.

Well you know I love rain. A rainy day is the best thing for my nerves and I don´t let it spoil anything for me.
Glad you don´t let a little rain get you under!

I love the rain. Walking and watching the rain form puddles and tiny rivers makes me happy. I think maybe people who grow gardens and raise stock have a different view of rain.

Here in the PNW if I didn't like rain, I would be pretty miserable. I know some people have problems with rain, but for me if I have a break and see the sun every now and then, I'm just fine. I get to use my rain gear all the time around here, too.

I know we need rain -have to have it to replenish our water supply which we need to live. But why oh why does it have to make my back and legs ache like darned toothache? I don't mind warm, gentle rains at all -very soothing most of the time. I don't care much for the really cold rains though because they seem to really permeate my joints the most plus -cold rains right now makes my house really cold, which makes me want to run the furnace and that uses up the little bit of oil we have to conserve till we can get enough money together to get some oil delivered! Vicious cycle that part is!

I love the rain, I love grey cloudy days, actually the only weather that really gets to me, hot and humid....and I live in Al. LOL
Great post!

I like rain though I love my sunshine. I'm learning to enjoy walking in all sorts of weather. I'm just looking forward to snow a little less each year.

Cloudy skies are what get to me. I really feel low when I don't see the blue out there. The exception is snow because snow reflects a lot of light and the brightness cheers me up. Alas I live in the south, so I'm screwed. lol

I used to run a lot and just loved running in the rain. Now I am not so sure.
a) I cannot run very far
b) I don't like getting wet any more.

These days I am a sunshine boy and enjoy being outside in the sun.

I did not have a moror cycle - I had a scooter, but it was a thrill to have the wind blowing in my face.

Love me some nature, too. Gotta have it. And rain, especially. Rainy days are my best days for reading, cooking, doing comfortable, warm things. Listening to the rain on the roof, pattering on the patio, hissing through the trees - blissful. Walking in rain is cool, too. Thanks for visiting my blog - I'll be visiting yours quite often.

I used to ride a scooter and I loved it so much. The thrill of being in touch with the elements. My partner wasn't so keen on me riding it, especially after we had the kids so I reluctantly bought a car. Boring.

I don't mind a rainy day or two, they give me a great excuse to stay inside and read. Then when the sun pokes through everything seems much brighter! I feel my mood lift when the sun shines. A gentle rain is wonderful to fall asleep to.

I love to experience nature too, and find extreme nature like hurricanes very exciting. Walking in a soft rain is lovely, walking in a downpour, less so. But I also feel that we should experience all kinds of weather first hand and not hide in our homes when it's not sunny and dry. I very much appreciate sunshine in my house, though, and so do my plants and my cat.

I hope Santa gets you those boots!

My sister-in-law LOVES walking in the rain! She just plain loves rain, in fact, she prefers rain over sunshine. I never could understand it. I don't mind a rain shower now and then, and I don't mind walking in the rain, but I much prefer sunny skies and brightness (even though my eyes and skin don't like it, I burn quickly and I wear sunglasses even on the cloudiest days). My mood is always brighter on the sunny days and darker on the cloudy/rainy days.

Love, Eileen
PS ~ STILL can't get to the 'porcupine' post! But I'll try again!

Living where I do, even the thought of rain gives me a thrill. If I even think it might rain, I start to plan a drive up into the high desert, mountains, or beach, just to see, smell and photograph it. So, yes, as a photographer, I have learned to love the rain. I just get very timid about exposing my camera to moisture as I could not afford to replace it. I don't get sad on rainy days, but I get very thoughtful and nostalgic. I love that...

I like to watch the rain from inside the house. It makes me feel motivated and productive. But being in the rain, getting damp and chilled... has never been my cup of tea.

I love the rain. And I don't mind walking in one, as long as my mobile phone was not damaged by the water.
I love the sound of rain and I usually stop teaching when it rains. I love cool weather too.
We don't have snow, so its the next best thing I think :)

Hi Techno -

Just stopping by to browse... boy, you're sure loving your camera these days, huh?

Anyway, thanks for dropping by to inquire. I/we are all ok... just been busy, also looking for work, which can eat into the blog time considerably. Maybe I'll get a post up soon :-P I have a few ideas, it's finding the time to write that's killing me these days.

Maybe I'll start with Sul's tag... I don't usually go for that sort of thing but maybe it will be a push to get the ball rolling again. Hope all's well your end too.

I don't mind rain - unless it is cold and being blown into my face as I cycle to work...

I do enjoy walking in "nice" rain - as you say, there is something very theraputic about it.

Rain I can handle, cold weather I cannot. That brings out the seasonal affective disorder in me. I liked when we were traveling the great plains, you could see the rain storms miles away. It was something to see.

We'll take all the rain we can get in Southern California.

Have a nice day :-)

I don't have that sunshine problem. I truly believe I could easily live in Seattle. I like rainy days if we are not having enough of them. The best is getting rain and sun because you might be treated to a rainbow.

My son loves the rain. He says it makes him feel peaceful. I used to be bothered by grey, wet days, but I've learned to embrace them. It helps to have a good pair of wellies! And a poncho, of course, too. ;)

I have to say that I really like rainy days. I enjoy reading and being lazy on rainy days.
