My new toy heats up quickly. In fact, it gets too hot to handle.

About a week ago I found a collector waffle iron at the local thrift store. It even has the original manual with it and sandwich grill plates as well.

I found similar waffle irons online and collectors pay $159 to $189 for one in this condition with the original manual and warranty.

After a wash and dry and seasoning of the waffle griddles, we had waffles. Plug it in, turn dial to hot, and the light goes out in about 15 minutes when it is heated to perfection. Turn it down a wee bit, pour some waffle mix into the griddle, put lid down and in four minutes you are eating golden brown waffles. We have had waffles two more times and each time they are superb. I prefer fresh strawberries on my waffles or some other fruit; whereas, hubby likes warm syrup on his waffles.

How much did we pay for our vintage toy?

$2.00.

1950 General Electric Combination Sandwich Grill and Waffle Iron.

Priceless.

What a bargain! I have never had a waffle maker but have often been tempted.

What do you eat with yours waffles - ice cream and syrup?

Love this -- I wish I could get a TV grill dated circa 1978. I inherited one when I was a student and I used to grill large balck mushrooms in it. A boyfriend stole it. Irreplaceable.

Ms.A, every once in awhile I find a treasure. Like this.

Rock Chef, bargain indeed. I like fresh fruit on my waffles. No syrup or whipped cream. Or sometimes peanut butter.

Mary LA, wow sounds like a great grill. So sorry to hear how it was taken. Do you scour thrift stores?

Wow! How great is that? I am not a waffle or pancake fan any more, but I was when I was little. I remember the waffles that my mother made.

I love bargains!!!

When you tire of waffles, maybe you can sell it for the big bucks.

Mmmm, I love home-made waffles. I may have to make some today!

I'm curious if your waffle-iron has a fabric covered electrical cord. My in-law's have an old, old toaster at their cabin at the lake. It has a fabric covered, super long cord. I'm sure it's considered a safety hazard these days, but that toaster makes perfect toast every time. No toaster I've ever had could get it just right.

It is amazing that the original manual and warranty were still with the waffle iron....a great find indeed. I haven't made waffles at home for years.

That is truly a fantastic find -both for the usability of the item and also, for the collectibility!

Peanut butter? I love peanut butter! With jelly too? Hm, think I can see a waffle maker going on my Christmas list!

That's funny. My son and I had a waffle discussion a couple of days ago. Basically the discussion was that he wants us to make waffles. If I had known it would only cost me two bucks I would have got one a long time ago! So where's that store?

Cheers,

Casey

What a find ! Over here waffles are called "gaufres"... I'll take maple syrup too please...

Oh Yum! Nobody makes quality appliances like that anymore. Keep taking good care of it and it will last at least another 60 years.

Way to go! Hubby is NEVER without his waffle iron. When they die, he moves on immediately to the next love-of-his-life, and at great cost. Of course, those of us on low-carb diets don't think much of all this. Don't tell anyone, I love a good waffle, with fruit, whipped cream and maple syrup. shush.

I really do love a bargain so I have to say I'm very impressed with yours. Just goes to show they don't make things like they used to. Hope you continue to enjoy your waffles.

Looks even more functional than the George Foreman Grille.

Brian, yes, waffle griddle and sandwich griddle plates to replace the waffle griddles.

Gary, almost as old as I am.

DJan, it makes perfect waffles.

Gail, I don't see ever tiring of waffles!

Terri, yes the cord is extra long and is cloth covered.

Jeanie, it was quite a surprise to open the baggie with the sandwich grills and find the original little manual in there.

Jeni, this is one of my best finds so far.

Rock Chef, peanut butter alone or sometimes with some honey.

Far Side, I am so pleased someone did the same thing here.

Kristina P, indeed a great find. It works so well.

Casey, do you have a thrift store close to you?

Owen, gaufres sounds so cool.

Hilary, I plan to take care of it and use it forever.

Rosemary, I totally understand your hubby's attachment to his waffle maker.

Happy Frog, thank you and thank you.

Betty, I think so too.

Oh Gayle, let me know how it goes when you use your mom's waffle maker.

Robert, I can vouch for that; I used to have a George Foreman and sorry to say it did not fit my style like this does.

great find - being a classic it would have been worth $2 even if it didn't work.
I love my wife's blueberry sauce on waffles.

Great bargain. "Good on ya!" - my dad would have said.

CiCi said...

lisleman, please share your wife's recipe for blueberry sauce.

Pseudo, we do have a party when I make waffles. Ha.

Shadow, I like the way you say it: yummy purchase.

blueviolet, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, waffles are super delicious.

Clippy Mat, you might be right about that. It didn't occur to me to tie the bargain to the great waffles.

Jilda, I made blueberry waffles and we gobbled them up. I am going to try cranberry next.

Dave, thanks. I really like the way your dad spoke.

This is something I dream of having. I had a friend who picked up one at a flea market and the waffles were divine. If you like corn bread and can find a recipe for corn bread waffles, give it a try. The warm syrup soaks in and it tastes heavenly....

Hea, we have an old waffle iron too. Bought it for one dollar at a garage sale. The electrical cord was shot, but my dad put a new one on. I dont' really think mine is worth enough to be a collectible. We did make waffles with it a couple times.
