Schools

Did you read this post at Life With Kaishon?

For awhile I have been thinking of ideas regarding schools. I am not a teacher, my children are grown, but I am a concerned citizen. No, that is not the same thing as a nosy old lady with nothing to do.

The women who saw the need in Philadelphia for an early learning center and put the work into all the aspects of opening such a facility deserve a huge applause of appreciation from their community and from all of us too.

I think the word "school" no longer has the strength it once had. Too many tragic things are now associated with "school".

We need to put the emphasis back on the basics of education at all levels of learning.

That is why I am proposing we use the words "learning center". After the little ones are adjusted to the fun of learning at the "Early Learning Centers" like the one in Philadelphia, the little tots advance to "Elementary Learning Center", then to "Middle Learning Center" before entering "Pre-College Learning Center". Emphasis is on LEARNING.

I didn't really have an issue with the name school, just what they do inside them.

it is a shame, too, that for example, kids from wealthy areas are pushed all the way through and are destined to be the next lawyers etc, whereas so many other kids are just supposed to get through school and work at walmart... seems like pretty big gaps in potential and opportunity

great post...with the advent of prescribed learning objectives and testing to determine certification of school, learning stopped, replaced by the need to keep ones job....

I know that schools are no longer like the ones I attended in the fifties and sixties. The teachers that I know confirm that something must be done, and perhaps the first thing to do is change the name. I'm off to read the link...

:O That is interesting, and it actually even sounds soo much better and motivating than the word school sounds these days. I remember I used to enjoy going to school and though my teachers were great but I don't know what's happening these days it's just not the same anymore.

Great thinking!

I might be wrong but most of the school call their libraries "learning centers". I still think school or academy is a good word. It's not the word/term that's the problem. It's our culture. Too much celebrity focus makes people think that's the best way to make it.

Interesting idea. Here, a lot of the day care centers call themselves Early Learning Centers.

I'm getting ready to attend the Unlearning Center, myself, but I'm not all that proud of it. Another ten years, though, and it probably won't bother me at all.
