Country Living

Living in the country has its own rewards
Plenty of space for animals and gardens
Four acres of elbow room

The family lived in a rented house
Large chicken coop and fenced chicken yard
Pigeons and pigs and cows and rabbits

This is the best they had lived so far
The two children thought they were rich now
There was food to eat and even time to play

Country living meant no neighbors near by
Also no need for curtains on windows
Privacy was automatic given the setting

The little girl didn't want to go to bed
She said someone was looking in her window
The parents laughed at her and sent her to bed

The bed time skirmish continued several nights
Her bedroom window was facing the side of the house
She began sleeping on the floor next to her bed

Finally the parents walked around outside the house
There were footprints and cigarette butts at her window
They told her about their discovery

Then they told her to stop being a baby and go to bed.

Four acres of elbow room!
Love that description.
This story stopped me in my tracks.

That´s so sad. I bet that little girl was afraid for a long time.

It's really hard not to be believed. And then when you are found to be correct, not to have action taken to correct the problem but instead to be ridiculed. Sad.

The fear is bad enough. The knowledge that the parents don't care is even worse.

That's crazy! When I was with my ex, we had a problem with a peeping tom, nothing me, my dog, and a gun couldn't fix!

It is scary enough at night as a kid but this is terrible. Very sad.

Worse that the parents knew about it & didn't care than if they thought it was just imagination.
Awful.

It helps a child so much to see that problems are taken seriously and then be shown how to resolve them (by calling the cops, for example!). This makes me really mad. We had a "pantie-bandit" after my daughter's underwear. It took a while, and a Nanny-cam, but we caught him and he did three years in jail.

Parents can do as much damage by what they don't do as by what they do. So many don't feel the need to protect their children.

wow the reality of this was not what I thought by the title.
What a terrible painful mistake by the parents. It's a bad cycle sometimes with bad parents raising kids that go on to be bad parents themselves.

I understand you broke that cycle and more power to you.
all the best

I would like to live in the country just for the experience of nature and privacy. But I'd be a little scared too, like the little girl.

Not sure why the parents made her accept the peeping tom though my gut tells me to suspect the worst since no one's around their place in the country.

ominous indeed. great write. gave me the creeps.

what a counter intuitive ending. i think it's hysterical that the parents told her to just go to bed after seeing evidence of a trespasser and sneak. i love surprise endings, no matter how dark and disturbed:)
